About Us

‘Basadi’

Basadi is the Sesotho word for women. It is primarily spoken by The Basotho people who have long inhabited Southern Africa in the Lesotho Region. Sesotho is one of the 12 official langauges in South Africa and is spoken by about seven million people.

Basadi Sewing was created in 2024 by Adventure4Change to empower newcomer moms who participate in their weekly women’s sewing programs.

The name Basadi was suggested by one of Adventure4Change’s staff members, Keorapetse, who speaks Sesotho.

As COVID-19 restrictions eased, the sewing program at Adventure4Change became a lifeline for newcomer moms. Amidst rising social isolation, it offered a welcoming space in the Waterloo Region for connection, sharing, and creativity. What started as a simple weekly gathering grew into a vibrant hub where women from diverse backgrounds and cultures shared fabrics, designs, food, and a passion for sewing. This community-driven initiative led to the creation of Basadi Sewing.

Recognizing the growing demand for sewing services in the region, Basadi Sewing provides 1) meaningful, low-barrier employment for newcomer moms and 2) an additional income source forAdventure4Change to fund its sewing program.
