About Us
‘Basadi’
Basadi is the Sesotho word for women. It is primarily spoken by The Basotho people who have long inhabited Southern Africa in the Lesotho Region. Sesotho is one of the 12 official langauges in South Africa and is spoken by about seven million people.
Basadi Sewing was created in 2024 by Adventure4Change to empower newcomer moms who participate in their weekly women’s sewing programs.
The name Basadi was suggested by one of Adventure4Change’s staff members, Keorapetse, who speaks Sesotho.
Basadi Sewing was born from the sewing program at Adventure4Change, which became a lifeline for newcomer moms during the COVID-19 pandemic. As social isolation grew, the program offered a space for moms in the Waterloo Region to connect, share, and create. What began as a simple weekly gathering evolved into a vibrant social hub where fabrics, designs, and food were shared, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds and cultures through their shared passion for sewing.
Recognizing the growing demand for sewing services in the Waterloo Region, Basadi Sewing emerged to meet this community need while providing meaningful, low-barrier employment for newcomer moms.
